A Father's Wisdom
Growing up, my father had words of wisdom on practically everything. He even had a common name for each of us kids. Regardless of whoever he was talking to, he called you "Fella." The name itself was both funny and endearing. For instance, when peeling potatoes or apples, he would say, " Fella you're peeling away the best part." "Don't you know that the vitamins are in the hulls?" If you were about to drive somewhere he would say, " Fella you know you have to drive for the other Fella too" (meaning the other drivers). His advice on dating and womanhood for all of his daughters was the same, "always respect yourself, never chase boys, and always use your head." Then he would add, "no one wants a Barrel House woman," (meaning loud and having questionable character). Although my father's advice was usually comical, it was meant to teach and guide us in the right direction.
Scripture says that God has chosen the father to direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just (Genesis 18:19). My earthly father was following the command of our heavenly Father. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it." All that my father taught us as kids I still remember today and have passed on to my kids. My father's wisdom was based on truth. My father's wisdom was based on God's word.
