A Moment in History

February is Black History month. It is when African Americans are honored and recognized for their outstanding contributions to society. It is also Heart Awareness Month. When we take a moment to look back, we learn of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams. Dr. Williams, an African American surgeon, who performed the first successful American open heart surgery in 1893. The surgery was performed at Provident Hospital in Chicago, on James Cornish, a young black man who had been stabbed in the heart. The hospital was founded by Dr. Williams. It was the first interracial hospital to train African American doctors and nurses (courtesy aareg.org and exhibits.library.northwestern.edu). Dr. Williams' lifesaving surgery exemplifies outstanding contributions of African Americans to society and heart awareness.

God also performs open heart surgeries. He is concerned about our hearts and our salvation. He tells us in Ezekiel 36:26, " I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." God's desire is that our heart awareness would be to spend eternity with him.
