Our Words Matter

Do you casually use words in conversation to speak negatively about yourself, your life or others? For instance, saying such things as, "my headache is killing me," " I can't do anything right," "I'm as blind as a bat," "Nothing good ever happens to me," "I'll never get out of debt" or "I'm old and can't remember a thing." Whether we speak seriously or in jest about ourselves, complain about our situations, gossip or speak harshly about others, our words do matter.

Most of us speak negativity out of habit without thinking about what we're saying. However, scripture tells us that our words have power. God spoke the world into being by the power of His words (Genesis 1, John 1:1). Since God created us in His image, our words also have power. Our words can bless us or curse us according to James 3:10. Words have the power of life and death (Prov. 18:20 -21). Words can tear others down with hatred and lies or build others up with kind words. Ephesians 4:29 says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

Likewise, whatever situation we're in, whether sickness, career goals, family or financial matters, we never want to declare negativity. Positive words should always be claimed! Scripture tells us that God hears our words and instructs the angels, who carry out His plans, as they listen for each of His commands (Psalm 103:20 NLT). For those who put their faith and trust in Christ, we are reminded to call things that are not as though they were (Romans 4:17). Finally, there is a sobering note regarding the importance of our words. "You must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak." "The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you” (Matt. 12:36-37).
