African American History - Trials and Triumphs

Black History Month, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, President Obama

African American history in the U.S. began in 1619 when African people were brought to the English colony of Virginia as slaves. Considered to be only three-fifths human, African slaves had no freedom and few basic rights. They endured psychological and physical abuse to the point of death as well as death. They were torn from their families, sold, denied education and self identity. The life of slaves were valued for economic reasons only. Slaves were used to work the vast wilderness of a new land, producing and harvesting agricultural crops, building a new nation and aiding in the world's economy. Since that time, the life of African Americans has been one of both trials and triumphs.

The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 brought the triumph of freedom to the slaves but the endurance of trials continue. Throughout the 400 years since their arrival in America, African American people have made tremendous gains with the passage of numerous Civil Rights Acts, declared as U.S. citizens, opportunities for education, desegregation, and the right to vote, but nothing has come easy. Through it all, they have made contributions and achievements in every area of life. These great accomplishments have benefited America and the world. While enduring less than humane treatment, prejudices, lynching, bombings, torture, imprisonment, hatred and gross inequality, African Americans began to succeed against all odds. They became inventors, brilliant scientists, God-gifted doctors, remarkable educators, courageous and brave lawyers, judges, civil rights leaders, talented and gifted athletes, entertainers, savvy business leaders, political leaders and even the president of the United States.

If African Americans could make such tremendous strides while under the duress of slavery and a multitude of disadvantages, how much more can they achieve today? The truth is, with God all things are possible, Matthew 19:26. God promises his people who trust in him, that they can do all things through Christ who gives them strength, Philippians 4:13. It was true in the past, it is true today.
