African Americans Still in Pursuit of Life, Liberty, and Justice in America

The Declaration of Independence in 1776 declared that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. That every person in the United States has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Sadly, after 400 years in America, African Americans are still pursuing to have life, liberty and justice, let alone happiness.

As America celebrates its 244th birthday, it is a nation experiencing racial unrest in the midst of a global pandemic. In fact, many have termed this nation's racism as a pandemic. But, racism and injustice is nothing new. Scripture speaks of racism and injustice. The Israelites who considered themselves superior, hated the Gentiles and Samaritans during that time and treated them unjustly. Jesus was treated unjustly. Racism and injustice was prevalent during bible times. It was prevalent during slavery in America, after slavery in America, still today in America and around the world.

Racism is a sin that continues to raise its ugly head. Turn on the news today and you will see hundreds of young people of different races marching in protest of racial inequality, injustice and police brutality. This brutality ongoing since slavery, has taken the lives of countless unarmed African American men, women and children. This is absolutely appalling and heartbreaking. Racism, injustice and brutality is unacceptable. It has been said that "the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" (quote by Edmund Burke). We know that sin will not be completely eradicated until Jesus returns. But, God expects His people to continually fight against all sin (1 Corinthians 15:34). Christians of every race should speak out against racial inequality, injustice and brutality. White Christians especially, the privileged and those with power who know the truth of God's word should live out that truth in how they treat their fellow man of every color. Christians are to be people of faith. But, faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Jesus says, "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me " (Matthew 25:40).

Finally, Christians who say they love God are to be His representatives to the world, showing others of every race the love of Jesus. The bible says, "Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar." "For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen" (l John 4:20).
