A Time in the Crucible
Do you find yourself reminiscing about the good old days when life seemed a little slower? Or perhaps the world seemed a little kinder and gentler in some respects? If so, you’re probably not alone. As we look around in our world today, it may seem as though chaos abounds in all things. It might appear to us that every area of our life has been impacted. This includes economically, socially, psychologically, politically, environmentally and even spiritually.
According to research, World Social Report in 2025, stated that a rising tide of insecurity, inequality, and distrust is fracturing communities worldwide, eroding the foundations of global stability. Despite advances in health, education, and connectivity, nearly 40 percent of people believe that life is worse than 50 years ago (World Social Report).
In this month’s Podcast, we discuss “A Time in the Crucible.” What on earth is a crucible you might ask? A crucible is defined as a melting pot or container used for melting metals (such as gold and silver). In scripture, a crucible is a metaphor for a severe trial, test or period of suffering that God uses to purify a person’s faith and character. We will also give scriptures on how God helps and strengthens His people while they are in the crucible.
A quote by Robin Bertram says, “Trials come. Tribulation comes. Fires of refinement come. The purpose of refinement is to bring to light the things hidden in darkness and then remove them.” As for us, our time in the crucible is a time for God to purify our character and test our hearts. For He tells us in Proverbs 17:3, The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart.
As we experience the various hardships from every direction, we may feel as though we are in a crucible or fiery furnace, but Scripture reminds us that we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9. In closing, Jesus reminds His children that “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” John 16:33.
