Daily Affirmations

Daily affirmations. What are they and why do them? Affirm means to validate, declare or state. Daily affirmations are basically positive words or statements that a person declares or repeats about themselves daily. Some examples include, “I am confident”, “I am happy”, “I am well”, “I am successful” or “I will have a good day”! These positive statements are used to replace negative beliefs or thoughts one might have about themself. It is believed that using positive words will help to motivate, improve, encourage or challenge a person to be their very best. It is often used in goal setting for improving one’s health mentally or physically. In recent years many athletes and well-known entertainers have revealed their commitment to daily affirmations to help them accomplish their goals, but anyone can do them to keep themselves motivated to accomplish their goals, dreams or for keeping a positive mindset. I must admit that this is a part of my morning devotional routine!

Affirmations are not new. It is believed that they became popular in the 1920s when they were used by a French doctor and pharmacist to treat his patients (talentedladiesclub.com). The patients were asked to repeat positive words everyday as they took their medicine. The doctor recognized that those patients who recited positive words and believed them, saw improvement in their health, while those who didn’t believe saw no improvement (talentedladiesclub.com). Daily positive affirmations are good and can be helpful if one believes what they say.

Scripture reminds us that words have power! We serve a God who calls things that are not as though they were (Romans 4:17)! Our positive words are powerful. However, it is important to remember that we trust and depend on God and not ourselves to make things happen. We believe what God says!

For Christians, biblical affirmations should be our daily affirmations. Biblical affirmations have existed since the beginning of time. These positive affirmations are our declarations of faith as we stand on God’s promises. We affirm what God has given to us and we take back what the enemy has stolen from us! We simply repeat what God’s word says about us and we believe it (Ephesians 1:3-14).

Some biblical affirmations throughout the bible include:

“I am created in God’s image” – Genesis 1:27

“I am loved by God and nothing can separate me from His love” – Romans 8:38-39

“I am redeemed” – Galatians 3:13

“I have no condemnation against me” – Romans 8:1

“I am the righteousness of Christ” – 2 Corinthians 5:21

“I am more than a conqueror” - Romans 8:37

“I am complete in Christ” – Colossians 2:10

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” – Philippians 4:13

Daily affirmations are beneficial, but our daily biblical affirmations are essential and eternal!
