It's Fall

Fall is that beautiful time of the year that many look forward to. It’s that time when God gives us a wonderful cool down and respite from the brutal summer heat. It is a gorgeous season, known for its kaleidoscopic colors of yellow, brown, amber, red and orange. Even nature appears to be happy about the change from summer to fall. It is an opportunity for her to showcase the beauty of God’s glory in spectacular ways in everything from the magnificent colorful leaf foliage to the brilliant and bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables.

The Fall season means different things for different people. For some it might be the excitement of football season, parades, fall carnivals and the State Fair. For some it might be an opportunity to eat their favorite cool weather foods – chili dogs, stews, smoked turkey legs, caramel apples or pumpkin pie. Some might relish the opportunity to wear their cool weather clothes of boots, sweaters and caps! Perhaps some enjoy a mixture of it all! I know that I do.

But, one of my favorite things about Fall is reminiscing about the Fall seasons from my childhood. I still recall my family going to town on Saturdays. Daddy would park on the Market Square. It was where the country people parked their cars when they went to shop downtown. While daddy and mama shopped, my siblings and I waited in the car. The Market Square was where the farmers brought their produce of sweet potatoes, apples, pears, bushels of dried peas, corn, collard greens or other fall crops to sell. It was also where my siblings and I happily entertained ourselves by watching people come and go. Whether it was my imagination or not, even the air seemed to smell like fall, like red delicious apples, popcorn or roasted peanuts. It was probably because these were some of the delicious treats we often ate and could expect on a Fall evening! It was a fun time for us kids!

Fall is a beautiful wonderful season, and I have wonderful memories from childhood. But, just as our childhood doesn’t last forever, neither does Fall. It has been said that Fall, mirrors the cycles of life. Although the season is bursting with vibrant beauty, it is only temporary. The leaves soon wither and fall from the trees and nature prepares for the next season, winter.

Finally, as Christians, there is one thing we can count on. Although life changes and seasons change, scripture tells us that God’s word remains the same. “The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word of our God endures forever, Isaiah 40:8.” Therefore, no matter our stages of life, trials/tribulations, circumstances with family or situations in the world, we can depend on God because His word never changes. He will fulfill every plan and promise that He tells us in His Word. Matthew 5:18 says, “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”
