Sisters Are Treasures

It has been said that families are a gift from God. If this is so, then sisters are God’s special treasures within the family. I grew up in a household with 10 siblings. I have 4 older sisters and 6 younger brothers. Our parents taught us that family is everything. We were told that blood is thicker than water, and that one’s family is bonded by love forever! This means that family is there for you when no one else is.

My family has been blessed with loving brothers and sisters who would give you the shirt off his or her back. However, my sisters exemplify the model of what a true sister should be. Scripture gives the best descriptions of a true sister’s character. Proverbs says having wisdom is like a sister (Proverbs 7:4). Sisters are valuable. They are there for you when you need them as a beloved family member. They offer wisdom and unconditional love. Sisters pick up the slack! If either fall, one can help the other up (Ecclesiastes 4:10). Growing up, my big sisters were all of this and more. They were given responsibilities for everything from cooking, to helping with childrearing, assisting us with our homework, and fixing my hair, to house cleaning and working in the cotton fields. They were dependable, responsible and mature kids.

Today my sisters are shining examples of women with character, strength, integrity, compassion and humility. They are always there for you! All their ways are pleasant and their paths are peaceful (Proverbs 3:17). We are not only sisters, but the best of friends. My sisters are forever!

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I honor each of my wonderful sisters as the virtuous woman. They are worth far more than rubies! As faithful servants of God, each are noble in all they do. They are loved and called blessed by their husbands, children, grand and great grandchildren! Also, my dear sister Billie, who has been eternally promoted, is not only honored as a phenomenal sister, but as a wonderful loving wife and aunt. I will always cherish each of my amazing sisters as God’s special treasures!
