What On Earth Is AI?
As a child I remember watching a science fiction cartoon titled the Jetsons. The cartoon aired during the early 1960’s. The Jetsons were a make-believe space age family who lived during a time in the far away distant future. The family consisted of the father George, mother Jane, teen daughter Judy, adolescent son Elroy and family dog Astro. Other characters in the show included the father’s boss, Mr. Spacely and the family’s robotic maid Rosie. Basically, everything in the Jetsons world whether home, school, work or play was run by technology. You could say that the Jetson’s world was run by AI!
In this month’s podcast we discuss, “What on Earth is AI?” The short definition, AI is defined as “artificial intelligence.” Artificial is defined as made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally(Webster). Intelligence is defined as the ability to learn, understand, deal with new or trying situations or to reason (Webster).
Through my google research, I discovered that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that allows machines to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. AI systems use algorithms, data, and computational power to simulate human intelligence, and can learn and improve through exposure to large amounts of data. AI can enable machines to: Learn from experience, Understand natural language, Recognize patterns, Solve problems, and Make decisions (Google). In addition, we discuss the pros and cons of AI and its impact on society. Dymtro K of Community Upwork.Com notes that Policymakers, researchers and industry leaders have a role and responsibility to ensure that AI is used to benefit society and minimize the potential harms.
As believers, we know that true intelligence comes from the Lord. It is not computer generated but comes from our Creator. Daniel 1:17 says, “God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom.” As for computer intelligence replacing human intelligence, that’s impossible. The Bible teaches us in 1 Corinthians 2:16, that we have the mind of Christ! This indicates that our intelligence is high above any artificial intelligence that man can create!
Finally, regarding God given intelligence versus Artificial Intelligence (AI) there is no match! Scripture says, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy (James 3:17). The bottom line is, God makes all things possible. We should glorify Him for providing us with technology and its advancement. And, we should praise Him for giving us the wisdom to know how to use this technology appropriately.
Food for Today
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5
