Who Do You Want to Be?

Ask any young child what he or she wants to be when they grow up and you’re likely to receive a list of idealistic dreams. Some dreams may include becoming a princess, astronaut, movie star, football or soccer player, police officer, chef, fireman, rapper, teacher or doctor. Sometimes, they dream of being several of these occupations at the same time, which sounds hilarious! Pursuing dreams and goals are necessary and important. Young people should always be encouraged and guided to dream and pursue their goals. However, one’s highest goal should be to build moral and spiritual character. Moral and spiritual character is essential. It should be taught and instilled in children at an early age. Sadly, as we look around in our society today, moral character appears to be going by the wayside. Truth, integrity, moral lifestyles and common decency has little or no meaning to many people. We can observe this in our political and government leaders, workplace, schools, churches, some social media platforms, neighbors and even in some family members. In light of this, perhaps a better question to ask our young people and ourselves is, “Who Do You Want to Be?”

The bible has the answer for this question and all of our questions. Since God is our Creator, He knows each of us. He is able to guide us in the way we should go. Scripture tells us that He chose us before the foundation of the world, Ephesians 1:4. And, He knows the plans that He has for us, plans for good and not for disaster, plans to prosper us, plans for a hope and a future, Jeremiah 29:11.

God gave each of us gifts and talents. These gifts benefit us but should also be used for serving God and others, 1 Corinthians 7:7, Romans 12:6-8. It is a shame for anyone to ignore or waste their precious gifts!

So, “Who Do You Want to Be?” Our response should be “Who Does God Want Me to Be?” Since we have been called out of darkness, and set apart for God’s purpose, our desire should be to please Him. Scripture reminds us that God has chosen us to be who He has called us to be (1 Thess.1:4).

God tells us who we are. We are saved (2Tim. 1:9); One with Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17); Forgiven (1 John 2:12), Complete (Colossians 2:10); A New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17); A Child of God (1 John 3:1); Redeemed (Ephesians 1:7); Light (Matthew 5:14); Justified (Romans 5:1); Free from sin (Romans 6:2); God’s temple (1 Corinthians 3:16); Not Condemned (Roman 8:1); Christ Ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20); Victorious (1 Corinthians 15:57). Finally, We should aspire to be all who God says we are!
